Voyage Gear

Here is a suggested personal Gear List for crew and passengers taking part in an extended voyage on Enterprize.

Clothing

You will want to bring a mix of warm weather and cold weather clothing, as conditions can be very variable at sea. It is advised that you keep a complete outfit aside for when you disembark at the end of your journey.

Basics

  • Underwear: 1 pair for each day, + 2 spare
  • Socks as above
  • Warm Socks for cold nights: 1 pair
  • Shoes Non slip sturdy footwear, preferably waterproof/resistant for deck washes and heavy seas. Consider a pair of sneakers for better weather and heavier boots for cold, rough, wet weather.

Warm Weather

  • Shirts / T-shirts
  • Shorts
  • Light jumper
  • Sun hat
  • Bathers and towel for swimming
  • Sunscreen

Cold & Wet Weather

  • Long sleeve shirts / T-shirts
  • Long pants
  • Thermal underwear top + leggings
  • Warm jumper / fleece
  • Warm hat + gloves
  • Windproof jacket Some wet-weather gear is available aboard, but if you have your own gear, we recommend bringing it.
  • Waterproof Overpants

Formal Nights

For voyages longer than 10 days only:

  • ⬜ Tuxedo / Black Tie
  • ⬜ Cocktail Dresses
  • ⬜ Evening Gowns
  • ⬜ Dress Uniform

Bedding

The bunks are provided with mattresses and a basic pillow, so all you will need is:

  • Sleeping Bag or other bedclothes
  • Bivvy bag or large plastic bag or drop sheet to keep bedding dry
  • Pillowcase, if using one of the ship's pillows.
  • Pillow, if you are fussy about having your own.

Other Essentials

  • Basic toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face washer, towel etc
  • Wash Cloth for personal hygiene between shower opportunities. (and don't expect many of those)
  • Sun Glasses Consider a sports strap too, to avoid losing glasses if knocked, esp. aloft.
  • Phone charger Remember that a phone signal can be limited or non-existent at sea
  • Small torch + batteries. A red filter option can be useful for retaining your night vision and that of your crewmates!
  • Water bottle
  • Zip lock / waterproof bags for keeping electronics/medication dry
  • Plastic bags for gear. These can useful for separating dirty & wet clothing from clean & dry; but also for ensuring that the clean & dry stuff stays that way. We have been trying to get the opprtunity and crew to recaulk Enterprize's deck, for some time now. She does leak a bit.

Medication

  • Any medications you take regularly Bring enough to cover length of voyage + three days, in case the ship is delayed for any reason.

Please advise the master upon embarkation what medicines you take and your dosage details.

  • Travel sickness medication. Various sea states will be encountered on the voyage. Even if you have not previously experienced motion-sickness, planning for some seasickness is recommended for all crew. You may like to consult a medical professional for advice.

In case of Landfall / Shore Leave

On many voyages, crew will have an opportunity to go ashore at various ports and explore. For such excursions, consider:

  • Day bag or Small backpack
  • Spending Money
  • A set of shoes you can get completely wet; for getting ashore from the inflatable tender on beaches etc.

Optional Items

Some other things you might like to consider:

  • Snacks While we generally have fruit and biscuits available, you are welcome to bring your own favourites!
  • Camera Don’t forget charger or extra batteries, extra media storage, and waterproof bag!
  • Eye mask and ear plugs for sleeping
  • Book or other small entertainment
  • Notebook and pen for keeping a journal
  • Nail clippers / nail file
  • Lanyard to secure your sun hat. Often a strong gust of wind can toss a hat overboard.
  • Marlinspike / knife / etc. (if you have them)
  • Deck of cards, or other games.

Notes

  • • Towels should be small and lightweight – quick drying travel towels are good!
  • • While the heads may be used for dressing, consider a sarong for use as a privacy screen.
  • • When packing please be considerate of space as your bags live on the end of your beds. Soft bags, such as duffle bags, are best!
  • • Standard 240V power is available for charging small devices. Do not bring hairdryers / electric shavers etc. Grow a beard!

Things NOT to Bring

  • • Wet Wipes - as they block heads
  • • Ground coffee - as it blocks drains
  • • Passport. Tasmania is part of Australia.
